It's a serious, thoughtful, and very excellent film. Not really quirky like the other movies in this section. Okuribito(Departures): An out of work Cellist takes a job preparing deceased for funerals.

A coming-of-age/roadtrip movie about a boy searching for his mother who abandoned him when he was a baby. Kikujirô no natsu(Kikujiro): Another Beat Takeshi film, but none of the violence that is endemic to his Yakuza films. Their insecure new teacher, desperate to try anything to make the boys actually work hard and practice, unwisely agrees to a very strange request. Oppai Volleyball(Volleyball Tits): About a middle-school boy's volleyball team. Quirky Feel-good Movies: Low-budget movies showing normal people dealing with normal Japanese life. It's the point of view of a Hotel manager and staff trying to deal with a Yakuza gang who are trying to extort them for protection money and such. Though not a Yakuza movie per se, Minbo no onna(The Anti-Extortion Lady), actually is probably the most realistic portrayal of Yakuza in film.
Some older classics are recommended here. Yakuza Movies: Beat Takeshi's movies are paramount here. There is a recent remake starring Beat Takeshi, and a movie with a female version of the character here. There are so many of these it's practically a genre of itself. Some recent ones I have enjoyed are Fukuro no Shiro (Owl's Castle), Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, and Goemon. Ninjas!: These movies aren't realistic at all, but are fun if you enjoy ninjas fightin' and stuff. My favorites are The 7 Samurai, Red Beard, Yojimbo, and Sanjuro. Historical Drama ( Jidai Geki): Anything by Akira Kurosawa. Here are some genres with some good movies in each one: Riki's father meanwhile sends out his own weapon in the shape of a former government agent, who goes undercover as the high school gym teacher and uses methods even more violent than those of young Fudoh's minions. The underworld goes into a state of panic and calls in mysterious and powerful problem solver Nohma. Buckets of blood flow (literally) when Riki and the kids start an assassination campaign against the top figures of the local yakuza, with his father as the ultimate goal. An extensive flashback at the film's opening shows how as a child he witnessed the grisly murder of his older brother at the hands of his yakuza boss father and his subsequent wish for revenge. Fudoh's true motivations are not just a lust for power. With his gang of underage assassins (forerunners of the kiddie killers in Dead or Alive 2 (2000), including five-year-olds with hand guns and a teenage stripper shooting deadly darts from her vagina) he not only controls the goings-on at his school, but aspires to take over criminal affairs on the entire island.
Set on the island of Kyushu, it tells the story of successful high school student Riki Fudoh, who leads a double life in organized crime.
